Deep-Water Circulation over the Last Two Glacial Cycles Reconstructed from Authigenic Neodymium Isotopes in the Equatorial Indian Ocean (Core HI1808-GPC04)

چکیده

Abstract We reconstructed the past deep-water character of equatorial Indian Ocean using isotope ratio neodymium ( ε Nd ) in Fe–Mn coating mixed-species foraminifera. When compared with previous records at same site (ODP 758) and another to west (SK 129), three datasets were consistent showed glacial-interglacial variations, even though other two extracted from different media (cleaned foraminifera bulk sediment leach). This confirms that while foraminiferal is preferred medium for reconstructing bottom water records, carbonate-dominated lithologies, weak acid extraction also a viable option offering high-resolution capabilities. lithology includes volcanic particles or high organics, protocol may need be adjusted guard against detrital contamination slight correction applied. During glacials, deep waters bathing had larger AABW component during interglacials NADW component. Our HI1808-GPC04 record supplements ODP 758 interval prominent signal (MIS 6/5 transition MIS 7) reveals regional effects some non-radiogenic intervals. The smaller differences between HI1808-GPC04/ODP SK 129 seem reflect input river systems boundaries.

Forcing of the deep ocean circulation in simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum

[1] From the interpretation of different proxy data it is widely believed that the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation during the maximum of the last ice age !21,000 years ago was considerably weaker than today. Recent equilibrium simulations with a coupled ocean-atmosphere-sea ice model successfully simulated a reduction in North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) formation consistent with reconst...

Dynamics of the Monsoon in the Equatorial Indian Ocean over the Last 260,000 Years

The coccolithophorids are excellent indicators of the variations in ocean productivity. As an example, the relative abundance of Florisphaera profunda, a species which lives exclusively in the deepest part of the photic zone, constitutes a reliable monitor of the depth of the nutricline as a function of climatic variability. Productivity in the Indian Ocean is closely linked with the monsoon. I...

The role of deep ocean circulation in setting glacial climates

[1] The glacial cycles of the Pleistocene involve changes in the circulation of the deep ocean in important ways. This review seeks to establish what were the robust patterns of deep-sea water mass changes and how they might have influenced important parts of the last glacial cycle. After a brief review of how tracers in the modern ocean can be used to understand the distribution of water masse...

Semiannual Cycle in Zonal Wind over the Equatorial Indian Ocean

The semiannual cycle in zonal wind over the equatorial Indian Ocean is investigated by use of ocean– atmospheric reanalyses, and linear ocean–atmospheric models. In observations, the semiannual cycle in zonal wind is dominant on the equator and confined in the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Results from a momentum budget analysis show that momentum advection generated by the cross-equatorial m...

Poorly ventilated deep ocean at the Last Glacial Maximum inferred from carbon isotopes: A data-model comparison study

Atmospheric CO2 was ∼90 ppmv lower at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) compared to the late Holocene, but the mechanisms responsible for this change remain elusive. Here we employ a carbon isotope-enabled Earth System Model to investigate the role of ocean circulation in setting the LGM oceanic δ 13C distribution, thereby improving our understanding of glacial/interglacial atmospheric CO2 variati...
